PG has been working in South Melbourne now for over 6 months, and I still haven’t ventured over from the CBD to have lunch with him! So we thought we’d go somewhere nice when I eventually had a lunch break that I could spare a little extra time. PG suggested Centro, as he’d walked past a few times and eyed the food coming out of the kitchen. It wasn’t top of my list to try in the area, but after having a look at the menu online I was definitely intrigued! It’s a quaint Italian restaurant with a cosy atmosphere inside.
It’s not normal for us, but we couldn’t decide which entree to get so we ordered two! I think it’s a must order when they say on their menu that it’s a signature dish, and how can you say no to anything with crab??
All our dishes were thoroughly enjoyed. First and foremost I must make mention to their signature calamari – it is easily one of the best PG and I have ever had. It was so tender, beautiful flavours with a hint of chilli. Just divine. You can order this as an entree or a main size, I’ll probably be going the main size next time! The crab fritters were lovely too, although maybe just a little dry and not enough crab, but other than that was still a delight to eat.
PG really enjoyed his Gnocchi that he ordered for his main. He finished the whole dish, although made mention to the fact that it was a little too cheesy and quite rich. My salmon was perfectly cooked, and went well with the accompaniments of snow peas and the sweet potato fritter. the sauce could have been a little more rich to compliment the dish, but other than I really enjoyed it.
For dessert we ordered the banana souffle and was another highlight of our meal. It was perfectly cooked and had a strong banana flavour which I loved. Souffle can always be deceiving, you can somehow convince yourself that it’s a lighter option on the menu so you don’t feel as guilty either at the end
